Letter: Sacrifice of rural Nevada is wrong
Friday, Sept. 1, 2006 | 7:17 a.m.
I wish to thank Chuck Upson of Henderson for his fine letter recently regarding water, growth and the theft (I call it theft, Mr. Upson calls it rape, either will suffice) of the water from Northern/Central Nevada. Apparently, Mr. Upson, no one is going to ask us - the voters - how we feel about all this. I guess it is not supposed to be our decision to make.
However, I do agree wholeheartedly that 1) stealing someone else's water is not going to help this valley and 2) uncontrolled growth is not necessarily a good thing. I believe there can be a steady, albeit slow growth in this valley without sacrificing rural Nevada or any other water source. We have no right to steal water - or rape the state just to keep a few developers in business.
Mr. Upson is also right that this town and no one in it is going to die from a huge slowdown on growth or even be mildly inconvenienced from it in the long run.
Lastly, I truly believe that growth and the water issues should be placed on the ballot for all of us to make the decision on how best to grow our town - as well as get water for it.
