Letter: Corrections needed to curb sleazy ads

A New York Times editorial, reprinted in Saturday's Las Vegas Sun, correctly identifies the sleazy attack ads put out by "independent" 507 groups, but fails to identify the basic problem.

Before the McCain-Findgold campaign finance law was passed, campaign funds were channeled through the Democrat and Republican National Committees, which were held accountable for the ad content, and we did not encounter sleazy ads to the degree we are seeing now when these committees are able to hide behind the independent groups.

Just like the termination of the Bracero Program, Congress needs to own up to the unintended consequences of a law and see about making necessary corrections.
