Letter: War tax would ease pressure on military
Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006 | 9:17 a.m.
We have an estate tax, also known as the "death tax" by some who think it should be abolished. It's there because our government believes it needs this income. If a reasonable tax is imposed upon the richest and most fortunate, then I have little objection.
By all accounts the economy, as reported by the federal government, is doing fine - those invested in stocks are gleeful and those with good-paying jobs are secure and happy, but what about the other America, in particular the military personnel component? How are they doing?
It appears we are engaged in a never-ending war with dwindling human resources and ever-changing goals. Life goes on as normal for the many and the few go to war.
So where is the war tax? Why should the many be able to lead a normal life with seemingly little or no consequences? Unless you have a relative, friend or loved one in the military, then you just don't get it. I want all of us to get it. I want a war tax now, then maybe we will all begin to get it.
