Letter: In search of direct Quran passages

Monday, Oct. 16, 2006 | 7:27 a.m.

I have a couple of questions that I'd like to hear a reputable Muslim cleric answer without metaphor or analogy.

Christian clergy and evangelists are known for quoting the Bible exactly, citing chapter and verse number. This makes their references verifiable. It's hard to misquote the Bible to the masses or the media nowadays, because they're everywhere.

My questions are about the Quran. Does it specifically say that 'jihad' is a physical, violent declaration of war against any enemy for any reason, in the name of Allah? Does it specifically say that a follower may or must kill any non-believer or 'infidel'? Does it say specifically that all 'infidels' are considered combatants in any jihad regardless of age, gender or civilian status? Does the Quran actually, specifically, verbally name Israel as the enemy? Does it demand the total eradiciation of this, or any enemy? Now, if none of these questions can be answered by an exact verse or line from the Quran, then every Muslim terrorist or jihadist is a heretic and a blasphemer of Islam.

If any one of those questions is answered in the Quran, then Islam cannot be considered the religion of peace it is purported to be. I'm ashamed to say that I have not read all of the Quran, just bits over the years. My gut feeling is that Muhammad said no such things, and like many misguided popes and kings, some Mullahs have 'interpreted' the Quran to support their plans.

Again, I realize that there is no way to ask these questions without being accused of hating Islam. No such thought is intended. Does Allah hate me because I'm not Muslim? Seriously, I'm asking.
