Letter: School safety precautions seem reasonable

Two years ago, when visiting my old high school in Chicago, I was shocked to see that the students had to enter through a metal detector, and a police presence was made known with a city officer directing traffic and a city police car cruising the grounds.
In light of recent school incidents and the talk of having armed teachers, these precautions now look reasonable for the safety of the school students and staff. This is required as long as we have irresponsible parents who have unsecured guns at home or don't take the time to monitor their child's activity.
