John Katsilometes notes the odd but strangely appropriate pairing of events on Oct. 28 that will close the venerable Stardust
Friday, Oct. 6, 2006 | 7:44 a.m.
The final night of entertainment at the Stardust will be a celebration of fetish and fantasy and Steve and Eydie.
But not simultaneously.
In a confluence of events befitting the hotel's colorful history, the last events at the Stardust will be Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme in the hotel showroom, and the 11th annual "Las Vegas Fetish & Fantasy Halloween Ball" in the Conference Center.
The hotel, which opened in 1958, shuts down for good at noon Nov. 1 Both the Steve & Eydie show and fetish-fantasy soiree are set for Oct. 28, and on that night one could pull off an only-in-Vegas doubleheader: Steve & Eydie's show time is listed at 8 p.m. (and will likely wrap by 10 p.m.); the ball is set for 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., making it the actual final event to close the hotel.
If you're willing to pay $69.95 for a Steve & Eydie ticket, and $75 for the ball, you can make both (though arranging for attire suitable for each event would be a wardrobe challenge worthy of the great Frank Marino).
Particularly fortunate are the organizers of the Fetish & Fantasy ball, which features all assortments of risque attire and outlandish theatrical presentations. Since it debuted in 1995 at the Attic, the defiantly edgy event has bounced to the Tropicana, then to Las Vegas Sportspark and finally to the Stardust (the event had hoped to move to New Orleans last year, but Hurricane Katrina wiped out those plans).
The agreement to lease conference center space at the Stardust was reached in the summer of 2005, and as event promoter Jeff Davis says, "We were really concerned when we heard the Stardust was closing that it would not be open by the middle of October. But once the chips fell, it was very poetic that we would be the last event. It worked out very nicely."
