Letter: Variable payouts would kill credibility

Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006 | 6:58 a.m.

My friends and I were appalled to learn in Jeff Simpson's Nov. 26 column in the Las Vegas Sun of an absurd suggestion from the Nevada gaming regulators that they may be willing to consider allowing casinos with server-based slot machines to change payouts based on the customer playing the game. This would give the valued customers more payouts than the average player.

Don't the state gaming regulators also represent that average player who saves all year for a visit to Las Vegas? I understand the bulk of the money the casinos win from players comes from those who play the penny, nickel and quarter machines expecting a fair deal, not to finance the moneyed players.

The reputation of Nevada casinos is at stake here. This idea should be squelched quickly before players here and out of state learn of the plan, and the public should be assured that it will not happen. In fact, it should be forbidden by the gaming regulators.
