Letter: Draft will mobilize war protesters

Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006 | 6:58 a.m.

The military draft needs to be reinstated to ensure that the "War Machine" carefully consider any of its plans to go to war. Without the draft, the War Machine virtually goes unchallenged. With the draft, young adults faced with the likelihood of being conscripted for military service will demand clear and compelling reasons for prosecuting such plans.

If the rationale is murky and unconvincing, these same young adults will protest vehemently, everywhere, particularly on college campuses where students have the time and wherewithal to take such action. It is only the prospect of widespread and continual protest that guarantees real checks and balances on an administration contemplating unleashing its war machinery.
