Letter: Staying in Iraq just placates Bush’s ego
Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 | 7:04 a.m.
The more I think about it, the more it seems that America is not making an intelligent choice about Iraq because somehow we do not want to hurt our president's feelings.
It is an example of "the elephant in the living room." Well, forget what is politically correct. Will somebody stand up in Washington and tell this administration that the people feel they have paid enough in tax dollars and lives on a war that will not and cannot go anywhere?
The American public is more mature and wiser than at any time in history. We see a situation in Iraq that is not getting better. It is a situation where we are not surprised with the daily horror in our news of killing and kidnapping.
This horror will continue for generations even if we send another 200,000 soldiers over there. In fact, it can even get worse by attracting more young Muslims who do not want us over there. Why are some people still trying to believe that our wonderful troops have been welcomed with open arms? The latest poll shows 78 percent of all Iraqis would like our troops out of their country.
There were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Saddam Hussein was not connected to 9/11 or al-Qaida. He is on death row. Doesn't this sound like "mission accomplished?" The Saddam mission was accomplished, so what in heaven's name are we still doing there?
