Letter: Assimilation is key to healthy immigration

Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 | 7:03 a.m.

Letter writer Sal Molinari, in Tuesday's Sun, states "Each of us are immigrants ..."

That may be true, but every wave of immigrants prior to the current one learned English and assimilated into the American culture.

Some members of my own family immigrated from Germany at the end of the 19th century. Did they expect America to accommodate them and print documents in German for them to understand? Did they expect their children to be taught in German? No. They learned English!

They used German often in the home but they learned English to conduct business, to understand the culture and candidates they chose once they became citizens.

And by the way, they came here legally.

I have no issue with people wanting to come to our country to work hard and make a better life for themselves and their families. I only ask three things: 1) That they obey our laws and come here legally; 2) They learn English; and 3) They assimilate into our society.
