Letter: Democracy is great, but also frightening

The election is over and democracy, the greatest form of government the world has ever known, has shown us its good side and its scary side.

Nearly half of the voters signaled their approval of the Bush administration, arguably the most inept and corrupt administration in our history. George W. Bush, at a black tie event in 2004, laughed and joked about not finding weapons of mass destruction and all the while American blood is being spilled on a war that is nothing but a big lie. And this is tragic and scary.

Dina Titus, a respected legislator and educator, lost her bid for governor to a man who allegedly broke the bounds of proper behavior. No Friday night drinking with the good ol' boys for Dina and yet she lost to a man of questionable integrity. Both tragic and scary.

Tessa Hafen lost her bid for Congress to a man who practiced the lock-step waltz with this corrupt White House. Instead of giving Hafen a chance to bring new ideas to Congress, we re-elect Mr. Lock-step to tread that same misguided path. Both tragic and scary.

Sherman Frederick, publisher of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, has discovered that by taking pen to paper and forming sentences, no matter how illogical they are, by some miracle these illogical sentences appear in print. Now that is scary.

But take heart you believers in democracy. We impeded somewhat the tide of corruption coming from Washington by capturing both houses of Congress. This is a ray of sunshine that democracy will eventually function, and function very well for you, me and our country.
