John Katsilometes takes an audio tour of the ‘Love’ soundtrack, due out Nov. 21

With the possible exception of his famous father and four legendary musicians, Giles Martin has listened to more Beatles music than anyone on the planet. Martin was given full access to all of the tapes (including outtakes, false starts and studio chitchat) the band recorded at London's Abbey Road studios between 1962 and 1970.
With consultation from his father, Sir George Martin, the younger Martin plowed through the material to create the soundscape for "Love" at the Mirage. On Oct. 26 at the "Love" studio at the Mirage, Martin led a few media types on an audio tour of the new "Love" soundtrack to be released Nov. 21. During the playback, Martin mentioned that, in his younger days, he resisted listening to the Beatles.
So what does the son of the Beatles' producer listen to as a teen? A few days later in an e-mail exchange, Martin (who turned 37 last month) explained his musical tastes.
"I didn't so much rebel; my dad was working on other music when I was growing up, and in the '80s the Beatles weren't as big as they are now. I loved music from the '70s, anything from the Meteors to Led Zep. I wasn't ever really into '80s music, I never really liked the 'sound.' This made me very uncool as a kid, even though my mum did buy me 'Now That's What I Call Music' to keep in the present when I was a teenager!"
For the uninitiated, "Now That's What I Call Music" is a compilation of top pop hits that has been released annually since 1981. Never has a Beatles song appeared on the series.

The city's foremost French horn-playing radio personality, Beth Lano, who teams with Mike O'Brian on KSTJ 102.7 FM's morning show and, on occasion, performs in the "Phantom - Las Vegas Spectacular" orchestra, recalls a memorable meeting with Prince a couple of years ago. Lano was part of Alicia Keys' orchestra during a performance at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. After the show, Prince made his way backstage with an entourage of seven or eight men. Word quickly spread that he was not to be approached, not touched - don't touch him! Don't even look at him! But Lano walked over, French horn under an arm, and said, "I'm also a DJ for the only '80s station in Las Vegas, and we play a lot of your music. I just wanted to say how much I appreciate what you've done for the music world." As the entourage fell quiet and looked Lano over, Prince smiled and said, "You play the French horn - what a wonderful instrument." So if you want to talk to Prince, pack the horn ...
Filling in one blank from Friday's column about Prince's three-song performance at the Rio on Wednesday, the first song he performed was "Fury" off "3121." ...
Left uncertain at the Orleans, now that Boyd Gaming Corp. has taken over operations, is the future of clubs/restaurants in the hotel. Popular businesses with names affiliated with former boss Michael Gaughan - such as Don Miguel's Mexican restaurant, Terrible Mike's deli and Brendan's Irish Pub (named for Gaughan's son, Brendan Gaughan) - have been the subject of speculation around the hotel. Boyd reps have for months been walking the property, surveying options, but during the closing of the Stardust, Boyd Gaming Chairman Bill Boyd said no firm decisions have been made about renovations at the Orleans, which he called "a great hotel." ...

It was exhilarating to see Monti Rock III back on the scene at the Rio last week. The Vegas bon vivant had recently been put on scenester IR (injured reserve) for medical reasons, but he's back and looking characteristically chipper. We bring up the Mont-ster's name in part to mention that he is profiled in the latest edition of the gay community-targeted Envy Man magazine. The story features this priceless passage: "He began using drugs, drinking and living a life of decadence. He was hanging out with Halston, he had countless lovers, servants and a monkey." ...
I've seen fire and I've seen rain - but not men with bungee cords hooked to Spandex pants: James Taylor dropped a Vegas reference in an interview with The New York Times last week. Taylor said he plans to revamp his stage act (his stage act usually consists of a stool and guitar) but noted, "We didn't call Las Vegas and ask the Cirque du Soleil expert to come in." ...
