Letter: Bit by bit, smokers' rights being taken away
When I have gone to these establishments, I haven't seen one child. And if I did, I wouldn't go in anyway. I love the smoking section in restaurants - there are no screaming children there.
FLASHPOINT for Nov 10, 2006
Richard Nixon returned to City Hall on Thursday in front of a large group of kids. Yes, Mayor Oscar Goodman, minus Tricky Dick's 5 o'clock shadow, told the youngsters the following: "I feel the media is really askew in our community. You can't tell what the news is and what the opinion is. I have no use for them." So good for schoolchildren to hear that from a prominent public official. What specific examples did he give? None. Of course. So let me be helpful. Goodman fulminating against the media because they are not all his tools is hardly news. ...
Titus calls for outside probe of Gibbons case
Saying the "credibility of the whole case is shot," state Sen. Dina Titus on Thursday called for an independent investigation into allegations that Republican Gov.-elect Jim Gibbons assaulted a woman and tried to force himself on her sexually.
Next best thing to a live show
Can't make it to the Rolling Stones concert Saturday at MGM Grand Arena? How about something a little more, well, intimate?
Editorial: Bridging a culture divide
In a ballot booth showdown in what has been thought of as anti-abortion South Dakota, voters rejected a new state law that sought to ban all abortions except to save the woman's life. In Kansas, a state where religious conservatives have opposed everything from abortion rights to teaching evolution, voters ousted a Republican attorney general who had bragged about his efforts to seize women's medical records from abortion clinics.

Jon Ralston tells us about his conversation with Chrissy Mazzeo
The grotesquerie of the Friday the 13th incident has not captivated me as it has so many. But because Mazzeo reached out to me this week, and because Metro continues to probe the case against the new governor, I cannot yet put it behind me.
LOOKING IN ON: BOXING
Laila Ali, the most prominent fighter in women's boxing, will make her Madison Square Garden debut Saturday night before a crowd expected to include her father, one of the most famous figures in the history of sports.
Editorial: People's vote hijacked
It's also not the way the state, or the country, was set up. The United States is a representative democracy, meaning we vote for the people who make the decisions and we trust them to deliberate and do what's best. If we don't like what they do, we can vote them out at the next election.
Editorial: America loses a storyteller
Bradley cut his teeth covering international issues and the Vietnam War before joining CBS' "60 Minutes" team in 1981. He was hired to replace Dan Rather, who that year replaced Walter Cronkite as anchor of "The CBS Evening News."
LOOKING IN ON: ENTERTAINMENT
It's the British Invasion redux.
Letter: Voters clear the air with Question 5
Very few bars have made any effort to ventilate their buildings to protect the nonsmoking gamblers and drinkers. As a lifelong nonsmoker, I will be happy to spend more time at the local bar that is smoke-free now.

Those who crossed labor were voted out of office
In the Culinary Union's headquarters just north of the Strip, there is a room with a placard saying "War Room" next to the door.
Letter: Finally, something turned out right
Of course, we all know this was not Rummy's reason for resigning. He had become an albatross around Bush's neck. But at least he is gone. But lest we forget, we still have two more years of Bush to contend with.

John Katsilometes rocks to Prince, who gave a brief preview of his show at the Rio
And on a night when members of the local media were invited to check him out, he made but one comment from the stage: "We want to see you here every weekend." Then he lofted his orange guitar (a Fender Stratocaster, from where I was standing) into the dance pit and vanished. At that point the crowd didn't know whether to dance, schmooze or flick their Bics.
For some, voice was like fingernails on a chalkboard
For some people it's hip-hop. For others it's country music. The first few notes have them harrumphing before changing the channel.
