Letter: Accent not a reason to not vote for Titus

Wendi Stewart is quoted in a story in Wednesday's Las Vegas Sun, "The voters speak," as saying she didn't like Democratic governor nominee Dina Titus. "She has a Southern accent and she's running for governor of Nevada? Well, we don't have Southern accents here," Stewart said.
Stewart ignores the fact that Titus is a longtime resident, UNLV political science professor, state Senate minority leader and has her personal life together. This "foreign accent" attitude coming from a voter in Nevada, where the majority of people won't or can't pronounce the Spanish name of their state, Nevada or Yucca Valley properly, is a joke.
Nevada should be pronounced with an ahh sound and Yucca with the Spanish u sound as in oooh instead of an uck sound as in Yucka. When I hear yahoos slaughter these beautiful Spanish words I may shudder a bit, but it doesn't keep me from voting for them.
Dina Titus would have been the best governor for Nevada. She speaks intelligently and should not be judged unfairly by a regional accent. This is America. What if Stewart applied for a job and was told they don't hire people who wear glasses?
