Letter: Past athletes cut from different cloth

Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006 | 7:35 a.m.

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Jeff Haney, Brian Hilderbrand, Ron Kantowski and Rob Miech, for Tuesday's paper, combined their talents to produce a full-page tribute to dozens of athletes who served in the United States Armed Forces.

The athletes named in the feature, all from past sports eras, are a tribute to our country.

I am sure there are many more athletes who served during World War II, Vietnam, or other combat eras of our military. One immediately comes to mind, Stan Smith, the tennis great, who served in the Army in the early 1970s. They saw it as their duty to serve, so that we may live free in this country. I wonder how many of the current millionaire athletes have served in our military.
