Jeff Simpson on how Red Rock Resort is fulfilling Fertittas' lofty expectations for profitability
Last week, Station Casinos reported Red Rock Resort's first full quarter of results since it opened in April. The luxury locals property has already reported $44 million in cash flow since its opening - more than the supremely successful Green Valley Ranch collected in its first full year of operation. Cash flow - or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization - is the number most used to represent casino profitability.
Big issues are all about people: Health Care
Nevada candidates suggest several ways to address the myriad problems of the health care crisis - including the uninsured, a shortage of doctors and nurses, and the high cost of drugs and treatment.
Big issues are all about people: Education
With Nevada's public schools trailing much of the rest of the country in everything from student performance to education funding, office-seekers face a host of daunting challenges.
Reality TV loves LV law
Parole officer Nate Peterson is standing in a bulletproof vest outside a home that belongs to one of his sex offenders - a child molester on lifetime supervision - a man allowed neither the "Happy Halloween" banner dangling above his doorstep nor the pumpkins lumped together and leading to his front door.
Voters miss out on useful information
If voters in Nevada's 3rd Congressional District want to learn the truth about Rep. Jon Porter and his Democratic opponent, Tessa Hafen, probably the best thing they can do is turn off their televisions - and ignore the political fliers stuffing their mailboxes.
Reimbursement rates have some doctors working for pennies
Dr. Bill Pierce is a respected family physician whose solo practice in 2005 brought in a half-million dollars .
Big issues are all about people: Seniors
Many seniors, who are living on fixed incomes, struggle just to keep the power on. Other seniors sit on nice nest eggs after selling their homes in inflation-bloated markets, moving to Las Vegas and buying similar homes at lower prices.

Jon Ralston attempts to predict the results of the state's elections in an unpredictable year
And yet I feel so sorry for myself today as I have to continue this infernal tradition of making predictions on the Sunday before the election. Oh, I don't expect anyone out there to feel my pain. It's all self-inflicted - something I have in common with Jim Gibbons these days.

FLASHPOINT for Nov 05, 2006
Have we ever seen anything as strange as this election year in Nevada? The Kathy Augustine murder mystery? The Lynette Boggs McDonald caught on tape saga? The Jim Gibbons not caught on tape, but caught on a cruise and with an illegal immigrant capers? The Club for Growth, fattened by cash from the parent company of the Review-Journal, almost buying a congressional seat? Attorney General George Chanos is in, then he's out, then he is documenting corruption at the city of Las Vegas? A sitting GOP governor won't endorse the GOP nominee? The loser in the Democratic primary won't even ...
Lies, lies and more lies
Given the choice to tout their own credentials or bash their opponents, candidates in Nevada have made a clear decision this year: Go negative.
Brian Greenspun on former President Clinton's call to overcome fear and vote for change
I have just come back from a most remarkable trip to China. You know, the country everybody's talking about with its incredible economy, globally suffocating environmental challenges, envy-producing skylines and all-around effort to enter the modern world.
Letter: Rage should be redirected
The rage is here, only it is directed at a Vietnam veteran who misspeaks about war and education. The rage is against the messenger, not against the lawless perpetrations of the war. As if the messengers, those who speak out against the war, are responsible for the deaths and casualties.
Letter: The real joke is the GOP
The Republicans support an occupation based on false information and allow select corporations to become extremely wealthy on the taxpayers' dollar and the troops' efforts. The Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Construction has exposed shoddy construction and overcharges by Halliburton and Parsons. They recently told of hundreds of thousands of weapons that cannot be accounted for and have probably been sold on the black market and are being used against American forces. And investigations have shown at least $15 billion of taxpayer money is unaccounted for in the Iraq occupation.
