Letter: It’s deja vu all over again
Friday, Nov. 3, 2006 | 7:22 a.m.
The election is nearly here and the words of Yogi Berra and Ronald Reagan best sum up the climate.
Yogi Berra said, "This is like deja vu all over again." Most appropriate. Gas prices declined from $2.42 to $2.04 per gallon in the 44 days before the 2004 election. Gas prices nationally have dropped 82 cents a gallon from Aug. 11 to Oct. 20, with a national average of $2.20 a gallon. Despite all the economic rhetoric about inventory, driving season, etc., 30 percent of Americans attribute the recent fall to politics.
Career politicians want us to think all is well and we should keep them in office, despite the fact the price of gas has risen nearly 8 percent since the last election, and health insurance and utility costs have skyrocketed.
Yep, there's an election coming and gas prices are falling. It's deja vu all over again. Ask yourself if you have more or less money in your pocket, or if so-called tax breaks have helped you.
Better yet, ask yourself the Ronald Reagan question: "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"
