Could a case be made that the Chrissy Mazzeo incident actually could save Jim Gibbons? The Friday the 13th story has no smoking gun - but abysmal spinning has spawned conspiracy theories and legitimate suspicions. But because of the media frenzy, two stories about Gibbons have been all but lost. And both have smoking guns. One undermines a central Gibbons theme - despite being so tough on immigration, he once had an illegal immigrant in his home. And this week, The Wall Street Journal published a devastating piece about cronyism, influence and disclosure. Both might have cost Gibbons more votes - if only everyone weren't so focused on sex, lies and videotapes.
