Letter: Teacher’s sexual preference irrelevant
Saturday, May 27, 2006 | 7:39 a.m.
As a Catholic, a mother of a gay son and a retired Catholic school teacher, I would like to comment on the May 24 article, "Gorman fires gay teacher." The Catholic Church believes that it is OK to be gay, but it is not OK to have sex outside of marriage. This, of course, is the same teaching for nongays.
Please familiarize yourselves with "Always Our Children," a pamphlet put out by the Catholic bishops. We need good gay role models for our children in schools. It may not have been prudent, as a teacher, to be as specific as Jeff Crouse was on his Web site, but he said nothing about having sex. He was seeking friendship from those who had similar interests.
Should we scrutinize all of our teachers' personal lives? What dangers might we find? Jeff Crouse, from the newspaper article, sounds like he was the kind of teacher to have been teaching our children. What he did in the classroom was exemplary. Isn't that what we want in a teacher?
