Letter: Hydrogen won’t work as replacement for gas

Las Vegas and the mechanical engineering department at UNLV are being led down the same primrose path as the politicians who wish they could legislate an easy fix to our oil dependency. Unfortunately, hydrogen has to be manufactured, and its production uses more energy than it can give back as a fuel.

The economics will never support substituting hydrogen for gasoline, no matter what the environmental benefits. If someone will evaluate the thermodynamics of the complete system, this elegant technical project will become another interesting curiosity.
