Letter: English as official language long overdue

I have been a supporter of Harry Reid and the Democratic Party, but I was appalled when I saw Sen. Reid on the TV news stating on the Senate floor that supporting English as the official language of the United States was racist. I take umbrage to that statement.

All of the documents generated by this nation's Founding Fathers were written in English. To view this glaring truth one only has to look at such historical documents as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, including the Bill of Rights, and the Federalist Papers.

In my opinion, officially making English the language of this nation is long overdue. The Founding Fathers must have thought it was axiomatic. They did not see the necessity of including it in any of those documents.

It is unconscionable that it has taken the immigration issue to bring it to the forefront. But, even though it has now surfaced 230 years later, it is not too late to cover the omission and affirm English as the official language of the United States of America.
