Letter: It’s time to base teacher pay on merit
Sunday, May 21, 2006 | 7:37 a.m.
Teacher pay should be based on merit. The key to educating children successfully is parental involvement. If parents are involved and interested, then the kids will be involved because kids want to please their parents.
Open houses are attended by guess who? The parents of A and B students. I can testify. I attended all of them when my kids were young and I heard teachers make this comment.
A lot of parents use excuses - such as, I'm too busy or you're the teacher, you teach - not realizing their kids want, need and care that their parents get involved. Involved parents + kids + teachers = success.
Base teacher pay on how many parents a teacher can convince to show up on open house night.
How can we get the parents involved? That's the $64,000 question. Our future depends on this.
