Letter: Border effort comes too late

President Bush in his infinite wisdom has authorized the National Guard to assist at the Mexican border. The troops will only be a supporting unit to the Border Patrol. Gee, does this sound like a "kid gloves" approach to a major national concern or is it a typical Bush approach to appease Vicente Fox?

After living in Southern California for 45 years, near Santa Ana, I saw firsthand what illegal immigration can do to a city. As a peace officer, I saw what a lack of immigration control and enforcement did to citizens and government resources.

One last comment on the Bush administration's latest "effort" ... previous and current administrations are about 25 years too late!
