FLASHPOINT for May 07, 2006

Sunday, May 7, 2006 | 9:08 a.m.

In the post-O.J. era, it's so easy to be cynical about juries and their lack of deliberation when they are supposed to be deliberating. But if the outcome of the G-Sting trial shows anything, it is two things. First, that this jury did not make up its mind after opening statements, as many believed it would. It was not message-sending, not saying all politicians are corrupt. Second, these jurors, or at least some of them, were thoughtful and, yes, deliberate. They considered the evidence, separated the wheat from the chaff when it came to flawed witnesses Mike Galardi and Erin Kenny, and made a reasoned and reasonable decision. They did their jobs and felt no pleasure in the verdict. Who knew?
