Letter: Government turns its back on Mother Nature
Saturday, May 6, 2006 | 7:44 a.m.
Would you sell out your mother - Mother Earth, that is - for a lousy $100 bill? Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and Gang had been proposing to do just that in their latest bid to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling.
The president, our crawdad daddy from Crawford, has been quietly selling out Alaska to oil interests for so long now it's getting hot up there. In ANWR, animals rule, and there aren't many places like that left. It's called Nature. My fellow Americans remember this fact: We are all environmentalists, responsible and accountable to our children and future generations to not mess up our planet. Which by the way, isn't going too well!
For Mother's sake, quit buying those giant tanks so many of you drive. Do you get the connection between big car, big oil prices? My blood pressure really soars when I see a Hummer lumber by. Shame on us for the cars we drive that keep the need to drill alive.
President Bush bears blame, too, for high oil prices by stirring the pot in the Middle East with his ill-conceived war against the wrong country. By the way, what's up with this giant embassy we are building in the heart of Baghdad that covers 104 acres? Sounds oily to me. Food for thought as you idle in traffic.
