Letter: Employers at heart of immigration problem
Saturday, May 6, 2006 | 7:44 a.m.
I have lived 82 decent years - never rich, never poor. A registered independent all my voting life. Here is my two cents' worth:
Most who sympathize with illegals sound like they are out of touch with the reality of what has been allowed to take place in our country. Maybe they are just mouthing the legislation the president has proposed involving guest workers, amnesty, etc.
I never heard anyone in this group say a word about the absolute heart of the problem. The illegals are here because of factories, stores, restaurants, hotels and on and on. They are here because of who is hiring them, and those hiring them are noncaring (lying if necessary), ignoring existing laws and paying them below - way below - what Americans need to support a family and aspire toward middle class.
It really does not take a rocket scientist to figure that out. It would seem to me that if we really wanted to move the illegals back beyond our borders, our governing bodies should do whatever it takes to stop this hiding-in-plain-sight criminal practice. We need to give America back to the descendents of the folks who came here and ultimately put us on a path of greatness for all.
We hear a lot recently from our national government that the illegals are doing work Americans do not want. Not true. They are working for wages our folks cannot exist on. Our country has lost its way. We have let our democratic structure decay. Greed and politics are ruining us.
