Letter: Republicans’ solution is no solution at all
Tuesday, May 2, 2006 | 7:27 a.m.
Leave it to the Republicans in the U.S. Senate to come up with a stupid "solution" to the gouging at the gas pump by President Bush's oil buddies. They have offered a plan to give every income taxpayer a "whopping" $100 rebate to help them survive the Bush buddies' rip-off.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to recognize that to do so would miss several million citizens who live below the poverty level - and don't pay income taxes - but own old cars and have to drive to work to get their below minimum wage pay.
Can't these politicos see beyond their noses? To make it equitable the state Department of Motor Vehicles would give the federal government a list of all licensed drivers from which the feds could issue the "magnanimous" $100 rebate. Or the states could step up and grant the rebates, then charge the federal government for the amount.
What am I saying! The Bush administration would probably foul it up like Bush's FEMA did in Hurricane Katrina.
