Pupfish meeting planned for Thursday

Wednesday, March 29, 2006 | 7:13 a.m.

Managers of the Nevada Office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Death Valley National Park and the Nevada Wildlife Department will meet with the public to discuss planned recovery actions for the endangered Devils Hole pupfish from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bob Ruud Community Center, 150 N. Highway 160, Pahrump.

The Devils Hole pupfish was listed as endangered in 1967. The inch-long, iridescent blue fish lives only in the 93-degree waters of Devils Hole in the Amargosa Valley in a section of Death Valley National Park. Although the cavern is more than 400 feet deep, the pupfish are believed to spawn exclusively on a shallow rock shelf just under the water's surface.

The population of Devils Hole pupfish has not exceeded 553 since surveys began in 1972. The adult population count conducted in November indicated a minimum population of 84, the lowest count on record.
