Letter: Too much made of weight issue

Wednesday, March 29, 2006 | 7:16 a.m.

When I heard that a local paper was doing a story on Courtney Paris I was excited ("A double standard when it comes to a woman's weight," March 23). We Oklahoma fans have felt that she has been getting stiffed all year by the adoring East Coast media. That excitement lasted all of about two seconds.

I am sorry that Ron Kantowski has to dwell on an issue such as her weight, as opposed to the fact she dominates every player, team and anything else in her path.

She, along with her twin sister Ashley, have become the darlings in Norman. Oklahoma University fans are just glad to have two wonderful young women who are solid students and represent the university in a positive way. They don't feel that being a "big girl" is an issue, so why should you?

Who cares what Courtney Paris weighs? From now on, all reporters should list their height and weight. Speaking of which, how much does Ron Kantowski weigh? I am guessing 5-foot-7 and 240 pounds, depending on the number of Big Macs he stuffs in his face every day.

Get a grip, this is women's basketball, not men's football. If Courtney Paris played football, her weight would be important, listed and probably inflated.

But I am going to give you kudos in that you had the courage to at least post your phone number and e-mail address. Which is a heck of a lot more than sorry ESPN would ever do.
