Letter: Pro sports leagues right to avoid Vegas

Wednesday, March 29, 2006 | 7:14 a.m.

Regarding Dan Kulin's March 26 story, "Major-league pitch a gamble for Vegas":

I'm old enough to remember the City University of New York basketball's point-shaving scandal, about 50-plus years ago, which diminished college basketball in New York for a number of years. David Stern, the NBA commissioner, should heed history and keep basketball out of Las Vegas as the outgoing NFL commissioner, Paul Tagliabue, has done.

Growing up in Brooklyn, where there was a bookie on just about every block, I know it wouldn't be that hard for a bookie to get to one of these players. All it would take is to get to know who is the most vulnerable, such as a drug addict.

I don't think a regulated bookie would jeopardize his career, but I'm sure that there are also unregulated bookies here and around the country who couldn't care less about careers and only care about making money.
