Letter: People need to learn to adjust to growth
Wednesday, March 29, 2006 | 7:14 a.m.
In respect to Brian Wargo's article in Sunday's paper about the gentleman who allegedly cut down trees in his neighborhood because they were going to grow and block his view, there's one thing I have long wondered about.
Years ago, when some developer was building houses up on the slope of Frenchman Mountain, the ad read something like this: The house is free. The view is what you're paying for.
Now, if some of those folks lost their view because of neighbors across the street, do they get their money back?
We had a grand view of Frenchman Mountain when we moved into this house 39 years ago, and thought we might still have it when we were asked to OK a self-storage facility between us and Boulder Highway (better than a grocery store or some such with cans or Dumpsters of food to attract rats).
But the "one story" self-storage facility became two stories in parts of the facility. The view now is mostly their chain link and barbed wire fence atop their block wall.
People (even those in the People's Republic of Summerlin) should realize this is a growing, changing city and won't stop just because they bought a home (usually giving the purchase less thought than buying a car).
Planes should turn right from McCarran, and neither the pig farm nor (if Bill Walters has his way) the sewer plant should have to spend up to millions on odor control just because someone's stupid enough to buy a new house right next door. As for views, the smog pretty much concealed those years ago.
