Letter: Concern should be for the unborn child

Monday, March 27, 2006 | 7:23 a.m.

Regarding M. Beam's March 14 letter, "Abortion is a private decision for a woman":

Beam demands that letter writer Mark McDermott and others "mind their own business" when it comes to the life of the unborn. She says it involves the woman and her conscience. While it does involve the woman and her conscience, it is the life of the child that is at stake. How do we forget that this is what the debate is about?

Who is to take up the cause for the unborn, since he or she cannot defend themselves? Despite the cries of women who insist that their conscience, choice and rights are being violated, there are many who actually care about the unborn and are not in this debate for mere political reasons.

I think Beam and those who think like her are expressing their selfish interests in not considering the life of the child within them. They do not take into account that at 21 days into pregnancy the spine of the child has begun formation. They either ignore or discount the fact that at 23 days into pregnancy the heart begins to beat.

It is time to save the unborn, whom science shall soon persuade America and the Supreme Court is a living human being deserving of constitutional protection just as much as the rest of us.
