FLASHPOINT for Mar 25, 2006

I remembered the late, great Mike O'Callaghan as I interviewed Judge Mike Cherry last week. Cherry is running for the state Supreme Court and the subject of appointing judges came up. Even though many jurists hate to run and believe it sullies the office, Cherry was all for leaving it in the hands of voters. I recalled how O'Callaghan and I used to debate the subject - he was on Cherry's side and I have long thought it's a disgrace to have judges run. Cherry made the same point O'Callaghan, a former governor, used to make: Only insiders will ever get the job, and he (Cherry) never would have been appointed. Maybe. But it's still the lesser of evils. Are you listening up there, governor?
