Letter: Impeachment would give America credibility
Friday, March 24, 2006 | 7:17 a.m.
This letter is in response to Sandra Miner's March 16 letter, "Impeachment case not hard to develop."
I recently watched Harpers Magazine's "Bush Impeachment Forum" on C-SPAN. It originally aired March 2. Among the panelists was John Dean, who has written the book "Worse Than Watergate." Also on the panel was Rep. John Conyers, who has proposed House Resolution 635. The committee formed through this resolution would have subpoena power to investigate criminal wrongdoings.
Does anyone have a problem with the people having access to the truth? I have included the actual title text here:
"H.RES.635 Title: Creating a select committee to investigate the Administration's intent to go to war before congressional authorization, manipulation of prewar intelligence, encouraging and countenancing torture, retaliating against critics, and to make recommendations regarding grounds for possible impeachment."
I believe the ouster of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney can help achieve important goals. We can show the world what a real democracy looks like, thus improving our credibility in the world. Then, hopefully we regain committed allies, which are desperately needed in this war on deadly extremism. We have created a vacuum in Iraq regarding key, committed, self-identified Iraqis to ever hope to organize a secure infrastructure. But we cannot just walk out on this mess.
It is truly going to take a committed global effort to resolve, and we cannot achieve that through this administration.
