Letter: Gay activists share label of intolerance

Friday, March 24, 2006 | 7:17 a.m.

Paul Campos' March 22 column in the Sun, "Intolerance of homosexuality is a matter of convenience," argues that Christians have an "obsession" with homosexuality, emphasizing it above other sins. While I agree with Mr. Campos (and Mr. C.S. Lewis) that no one sin is greater than any other in the eyes of God, it is the homosexual activists, not the "Christian conservatives," who are putting the homosexual lifestyle on the public agenda.

Homosexual activism has been attacking any institution (including religious ones) that simply objects to the homosexual lifestyle. The Boy Scouts of America and the Massachusetts Catholic Charities are just two examples.

If Mr. Lewis were alive today, he would see that this is not a matter of objecting to a particular carnal pleasure; rather, it is a matter of free religious expression.

Today, it is unpopular to even call homosexuality a sin, let alone a great sin. While Mr. Lewis rightly criticized Christians in his day for emphasizing homosexual sin simply because it was socially disreputable, homosexual activists should be criticized for emphasizing religious beliefs that contradict the homosexual lifestyle.

I also take issue with Mr. Campos' use of the word "intolerance." Today's Christians are actually tolerant of homosexuality in that they disagree with it, but acknowledge the individual's right of choice. It is the homosexual activist who is practicing intolerance by trying to pressure religious institutions to change their beliefs.
