Letter: Raise salaries for county’s teachers

Wednesday, March 22, 2006 | 7:09 a.m.

If there is one thing that the Clark County School Board has been successful at it's holding down teachers' salaries. While our police recruits with a high school diploma have starting salaries in the mid-40s, our teachers with a college degree start at $28,700.

I do not question the police salary; they have a dangerous job and deserve everything they get. But to hold teachers in such low esteem by paying them these ridiculous salaries shows what School Board members think of their efforts.

The Board should make every effort to raise salaries so as to attract and hold the best teachers. Sending recruiters overseas is not the answer. They could fill all their vacancies if they paid competitive salaries.
