Letter: President’s critics labeled ‘liberal’ too freely

Sunday, March 19, 2006 | 7:25 a.m.

In the March 14 Las Vegas Sun, Melvin C. Bailey Jr. wrote an articulate piece about the present administration's failures and the label "liberal" in his letter headlined "You don't have to be liberal to dislike Bush." First of all, I believe that extreme liberals and extreme conservatives encompass a small percent of the population on either end of the political spectrum, and the rest are sane people who are willing to listen to comments from all sources.

The majority chooses to exercise freedom of choice and accept some ideas that tend to be conservative and others that tend to be liberal. The danger, in my opinion, is when the liberal or conservative thinking gets extreme, and shuts out a healthy exchange of opinions on an issue.

There has been more criticism of the president now occupying the White House than any of us can remember. It is unfortunate that the extreme conservative element does not offer a rational explanation for the president's series of questionable decisions, but chooses to blame the criticisms on the "liberals." They make it sound like anyone who does not agree with this president is a liberal, which I guess is supposed to be a bad person.
