Where’s the beef on St. Patrick’s Day? In Reno

Wednesday, March 15, 2006 | 7:05 a.m.

Want corned beef?

If you are Roman Catholic and you want a guilt-free meal of the traditional St. Patrick's Day fare of corned beef and cabbage, you'll have to head to Reno.

The Irish saint's day falls on a Friday during Lent this year, when Catholics are expected to abstain from meat.

Bishop Randolph Calvo of the Reno Diocese has given his parishioners special permission to break the beef fast on St. Patrick's Day, as have several cardinals and bishops with large Irish-American populations, including in New York and Boston.

But Bishop Joseph Pepe of the Las Vegas Diocese has not.

Reno is 449 miles up the road.

"That's a long way to go for corned beef and cabbage," chuckled Brother Matthew Cunningham, chancellor of the Reno Diocese.
