Letter: Gorman’s court battle sends the wrong message

Wednesday, March 15, 2006 | 7:09 a.m.

I am a Reno High graduate (Go Huskies!) and am married to a Gorman alum, and I am the mother of three Gorman students. I read your article and agree with much of it. My comments:

Not all Gorman parents and students supported the legal maneuvering. When the NIAA put Gorman on probation, I sent a letter to Gorman in which I stated my hopes that Gorman would set a good example and hold itself accountable for not conforming with the spirit, if not the letter, of the NIAA's rules.

I truly think the message being sent - that when you don't like the rules, go to court - is the wrong message to send to our students.

It's very sad that the NIAA finds itself under fire for attempting to maintain a level playing field. What's worse is that parents, coaches, and administrators will go to such lengths to win a game when the cost is a loss of credibility in the eyes of students.
