Letter: Gorman should follow same rules as everyone else
Wednesday, March 15, 2006 | 7:09 a.m.
Regarding Ron Kantowski's column on the 4A public schools seeking a level playing field with Bishop Gorman ("Why some NIAA members are fed up with Gorman playing by own rules," March 11).
I have lived in Southern Nevada since 1963, and raised three children here. I played high school football here as do my sons. My friends and I kind of tolerated Bishop Gorman because they were the little school on Maryland Parkway. Sometimes we found it annoying when they would recruit some of the better players, but it made it all the better when we beat them.
Things have changed. With the explosion of growth it has become more and more difficult to keep a team together. My oldest son started high school at Centennial and was part of a program of undefeated teams (ninth grade, junior varsity and varsity). These teams were split up by Shadow Ridge, and again by Arbor View.
Gorman does not have to deal with this because their kids come from all over the district and stay together under one program.
Gorman has and does play by its own rules when it comes to athletics. It is time for a change. If Gorman does not like the NIAA rules, it should seek opponents elsewhere.
