Letter: Outsourcing puts U.S. citizens in dire straits
Sunday, March 12, 2006 | 7:23 a.m.
With Las Vegas experiencing tremendous growth, a shortage of jobs is not an issue. But such is not the reality for thousands of citizens who live in other states and have lost their jobs to outsourcing.
Recently, the president set out on his mission to persuade citizens to privatize their health care. A year ago, his mission was persuasion for the privatization of Social Security.
He visited with the jobless in depressed areas, those who had dedicated years, and possibly money for schooling, for the position they once held, who now struggle to pay for groceries, meet their mortgage, et al. Unconcerned, he told them to retrain and start again!
I'm a staunch supporter of privatization. Nothing nourishes self-esteem like one who is in charge of his life, his fortune. But how does one privatize when there is little or nothing to access?
And I believe outsourcing is good when it is an equitable trade. Yet, as our trade deficit grows larger and larger, as our corporations sell out to cheap overseas labor, far too many of our citizens face a dismal future.
Let's hope that common sense returns to our well-paid, financially secure leaders and persuades them to rethink their countrymen's plight, so that our fellow citizens can afford to visit our city and enjoy, so we can be job secure.
