Letter: A president we can’t ignore - or forget
Sunday, March 12, 2006 | 7:23 a.m.
An old adage states that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. This letter, then, is in reply to Steve Berner's letter from March 6 suggesting (with tongue in cheek, I hope) that the presidency of George Bush should be omitted entirely from future history books.
Realistically, though, I fully agree with Mr. Berner's assessment of Dubya's "reign" as the very worst I have lived through in my 80-plus years - and, unfortunately, his term has 2 1/2 years more to go!
So, my counter-suggestion is A) to list this lame-brained presidency in the history books - with each and every action or failure to act, with its resulting consequences and B) make the teaching of American history mandatory and in depth in every American school, beginning at an age-appropriate term and continuing through high school.
Maybe, just maybe, we will then not continue to be a nation of dumbed-down citizenry who would again be likely to vote into office such an incompetent, crony-oriented, "compassionate conservative" individual.
