Letter: Abortion ban in South Dakota is outrageous
Saturday, March 11, 2006 | 7:29 a.m.
I am outraged at the audacity of the religious right. Even though 98 percent of the women in this country have used birth control at some point in their lives and the right to an abortion has been codified in law since the 1970s, others still persist in trying to tell women what they can and cannot do with their bodies.
The abortion ban in South Dakota is outrageous. Polling consistently shows the majority of Americans support a woman's right to choose. This legislation is wildly out of step with mainstream America.
If politicians in South Dakota truly cared about reducing the number of abortions, they would work with Planned Parenthood to increase access to contraception and medically accurate sex education.
This ban is a challenge to Roe v. Wade and directly violates the fundamental right to privacy and the right to make private, personal health care decisions.
I urge other Southern Nevadans to take up the call and not allow this case to make its way to the Supreme Court and threaten precedent.
