Letter: Not buying argument about our schools
Thursday, March 9, 2006 | 7:19 a.m.
As a longtime resident with many years of local teaching experience, I have some questions in response to David Brooks' March 4 column offering tips for a better education.
When our billion-dollar educational sector struggles to produce even functional mediocrity in reading, writing and arithmetic (much less, moral education and intellectual rigor!), do you honestly believe lavishing yet ever more untold tax dollars on this same sector will help answer any of these questions?
It isn't the money, folks - it's the system and the people within it. Until we change those, all the money in the world won't answer the questions posed by Brooks or meet their challenges.
