Letter: No consensus reached on global warming
Sunday, June 25, 2006 | 7:52 a.m.
The condescending June 20 letter by Dan M. Heffley, "Global warming is a matter of science," ignores the petition signed by over 19,000 independent scientists (not dependent on government-generated monies) declaring that mankind activities have no influence on global climate changes. The cyclical climate changes have been going on for millions of years.
The last ice age happened some 13,000 years ago, with the cycle of about 15,000 years. We can expect a new ice age to occur within the next few thousand years. If (and that is a big if) there is a small uptick in global temperatures occurring now, it is just that and has nothing to do with puny human activities occurring now.
Some 30 years ago many of the same "scientists" (all government paid, directly or indirectly) declared the coming of a new ice age and called for government action to prevent it (for example, by covering the polar ice cap with soot). Failing such government action, they predicted our cities being overrun by glaciers.
Please have Mr. Heffley read that petition signed by 19,000-plus independent scientists (of which I am one - I received my Ph.D in the field of engineering); perhaps it might cool his ardor for Al Gore, that inventor of World Wide Web and re-inventor of government (ha-ha).
