Letter: Trade show industry could help School District

Friday, June 23, 2006 | 7:18 a.m.

Regarding the Las Vegas Sun's June 11 story, "The Recruiter," about a local principal who traveled to a conference for science teachers in California in order to recruit for the Clark County School District:

I have delayed writing in response to the article mentioned above in part because I have been searching for the correct words to convey my thoughts about what Clark County and the city of Las Vegas screamed in volumes by our lack of presentation at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Kudos to the volunteer recruiter / principal who stood his ground amid well-prepared recruiters from other school districts. But I am a little embarrassed that in a growing city, which for the past five years has led the country in the trade show industry, we would send a principal so ill-prepared to a trade show. Would anyone in the trade show industry be able to offer the Clark County School District some trade show education?

As someone who has worked in the growing trade show industry, I know that Las Vegas is the No. 1 trade show location in the country. Las Vegas has the three largest convention locations in the United States. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is proud of its efforts to continually draw people and trade shows here. Las Vegas is also home to many trade show decorators - the folks who coordinate the shows - Freeman Decorating, GES and Czarnowski are three that come readily to mind.

I am wondering in this day and age of networking and community pride, couldn't the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority "donate" some services or unused advertising items to the Clark County School District to take to conventions? Maybe one of the decorating companies could offer some suggestions for low-cost presentations to help recruit qualified teachers for our fine city?
