Letter: Dixie Chicks not first to mix music, politics
Thursday, June 22, 2006 | 7:11 a.m.
I am not a country music fan, but let me say I love the music of the Dixie Chicks. And I applaud their fearlessness when it comes to speaking their minds. I don't think it matters to many country music fans that they spoke their minds in London. They just don't want to hear about their dislike of George Bush.
But what I find disturbing are the bomb threats and other threats on their lives. If you don't want to listen to their music, fine, but do not threaten to kill them. So much for freedom of speech!
The Dixie Chicks are "not ready to make nice." As for their popularity, I had a hard time getting the new CD on its release date. And it was the No. 1 seller for a couple of weeks.
I will continue to buy their music, not for their politics, but because their music is great. And Natalie Maines has an awesome voice. I am a Baby Boomer, and music has been full of politics since the '60s. And I am a great believer in freedom of speech, for all of us, not just those who agree with the government.
