Letter: Missouri Plan on judges is flawed

Regarding Jon Ralston's June 11 column, in which he wrote why he believes Nevada judges should be appointed:

The Missouri Plan, even when modified, does not remove the selection of judges from political considerations. The appointment by a committee formed by political entities would still require the appointee to be somewhat beholden to the political parties.

Even the modified plan, where the initial judicial position is attained through contested election and, thereafter, uncontested retention elections only, does not ensure the independence of the judiciary. For proponents of the Missouri Plan to call the political appointment of judges "merit selection" is blowing smoke.
