Letter: Gay marriage is the least of our worries
Wednesday, June 7, 2006 | 7:38 a.m.
The Republicans are beginning to panic at the thought of the approaching November election. The prospect of losing seats in the Senate and House terrifies them.
So, what do they do? They revive a proposed constitutional amendment on gay marriages. I couldn't care less about this in light of the problems this country faces with the Iraq war, the bellicose posturing with Iran, the oil crisis, global warming, exportation of jobs overseas, illegal immigration, our national trade deficit, etc. The administration is reviving its push for the constitutional amendment to appease and revive the support of the religious zealots and take attention away from the most serious problems facing this country.
They have created the environment leading to most of these problems facing the U.S. and are now using the marriage amendment as a diversion. While I do not agree with the concept of same-sex marriages, I don't believe this amendment is anything more than a game of dodge ball put on by the Republicans.
Mr. President, if your daughters were marrying a kangaroo and a jackass I couldn't care less about their choice of marriage partners. Just send me the wedding pictures!
