Letter: Bush has country’s priorities out of order
Wednesday, June 7, 2006 | 7:39 a.m.
To quote a phrase from a person the Republicans think is God, "Well, there you go again." The gay marriage amendment that was so prevalent in the 2004 elections, and then inexplicably went away, has now reared its ugly head again on the Senate floor and in addresses from President Bush.
The ruling party seems to have no problem approving billions upon billions to continue the killing in Iraq or preparing national energy policies behind closed doors with oil executives, who then make record profits off the resulting policy, which to them is good government. Spy on American citizens without proper authorization? Sure, that sounds like a winner to them. And running our national deficit up to record levels, while giving handouts to the wealthy and program cuts to the poor, suits them just fine.
But let two people express their love for each other? Well, if it makes the Republicans feel "icky," they must be squelched at all costs.
After the November 2004 elections, the London Daily Mirror ran a headline, "How can 59 million Americans be so dumb?" If voters in 2006 ignore the horrendous state of this country's foreign and domestic affairs and instead believe a political campaign stunt that promises to write bigotry and prejudice into our Constitution, then they will have once again proven to the country and the world their mental state.
